It’s a question many of us ask when we go out to a resturant. How much should I tip? Whether your service is good or bad, San Francisco wants to implent a 25% standard tip on to your bill for you. Is this fair? Many resturant workers say yes, it’s about time. People who go out to eat a lot, aren’t as happy with the idea.
According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, for the most part people tip 15-20% and the resturant worker actually has to claim 15% of that to the IRS.

One person who isn’t happy with the idea says, “They have to be kidding. The whole purpose of a tip is to reward service.” Another person who’s not for the new tip increase says, “Tips should be earned, not expected. I usually tip 10-15% which I think is fair. If they really want a bigger tip they might try to increase their service to justify it.”

Insane. It would be mandatory for me to tip a waiter for being a waiter. No more incentive for performance. Well its just one more reason to avoid San Francisco. I would rather tip a teacher or some other public servant.

ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? THIS KIND OF BS IS PUT OUT BY MGT SO THEY DO NOT HAVE TO PAY A LIVING WAGE. AS A CONSUMER I WOULD NEVER PAY 25% OR ANY SET PRICE FOR SERVICE.

Tips reflect the service the diner received during their meal. Normal quality and service rates about 15%. Anything above that means above average quality of service. San Fransicko continues to support the mediocre by making bad and quality service the same. Typical Communist delusional thinking. Scew that philosophy. I’ll eat at the coner store or out of town before I support mediocrety.

Let the level of service dictate the tip. The quality of service will decline even more. Why reward an already low level of service in the business.

I believe good tips are earned. I always give 15% but give more for exeptional service. I would not eat anywhere that it its added to the check. Service would get poor as a result. The restraunt owner should pay their employees more in this economy and reward their employees for making customers happy leading to more repeat customers.

Let the owners decrease their profit margin.they should pay their employed more not us. Tips are rewards for great service. Cooks who actually create the great food are not. Tipped, why?

That’s crazy! I have worked in 2 restaurants n my life, u get tipped on you surface and the food. I took my wife out to eat at a well known restaurant the waiter walked by us many times never waited on us,I talked to manager before anyone waited on us. After we got our food no one checked back. Do u think they got a tip? NO

15% is fair so says IRS!!! that is a fair tip if that is what they must declare!!!

“the restaurant worker actually has to claim 15% of that to the IRS”

Please do better research before writing acticles. The required amount of tips that has to be reported per restaurant is 8% or the employees get allocated additional tips to bring the restaurant into compliance. All tips are supposed to be reported according to the IRS but waiters report 8% as a general practice.
