Trick-or-treating is fun for everyone! But now the FDA says there’s candy out there that is extremely bad for your health and can cause hospitalization or even death! Can you guess which candy this is? This is the one treat I wont eat because I just hate the taste… but now there is even more reason for me not to eat it!
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning people, especially adults 40 years of age or older, to cut back on black licorice. Eating 2 ounces of this stuff a day for at least two weeks may lead to arrhythmia, or irregular heart rhythm, which could very well put you in the emergency room.
The reason for this? A sweetening compound found in black licorice called glycyrrhizin can cause your potassium levels to drop, which may lead to abnormal heartbeat and high blood pressure.
Although the FDA only got one report of this actually affecting a person last year, it’s still a possible issue! I don’t remember getting too much black licorice as a kid in my goodie bag, but you never know… If you like licorice, stay with the red and drop the black!
