Katy Perry has built an entire brand off of embodying the quintessential pop star. She’s cute, spunky, and seemingly perfect. However, in her new 3D documentary, Part of Me, Perry gives us a backstage pass to the downside of fame.
The film follows the 27-year-old for 365 days of her massively successful California Dreamstour. Her career was skyrocketing, but it took a toll on her marriage with comedian Russell Brand.
These days, most pop stars would never consider documenting this pain on film, but Perry bares all for the cameras.
Brand appears in a few scenes, mainly towards the beginning of Part of Me. There was an audible gasp in the theater when he first came on the screen. Everyone in the audience knows how this story ends, but you can’t help but feel for the couple that seems hopelessly in love at that moment. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s refreshingly honest.
One night, Katy is scheduled to perform in Brazil, but she can’t stop crying and it’s clear it has something to do with her rocky marriage. Her management team wonders if they should cancel the concert all together, but through the tears, Katy instructs the makeup artist to begin working on her.
Even as she waits in the underbelly of the stage, Perry fights back the tears. But then you witness the moment where Katy becomes a star. She takes a deep breath, puts on a smile, and gets through the night somehow.
The film also addresses her relationship with her evangelical parents. Despite what many of the tabloids say, Katy explains the biggest misconception about her is that people think her parents have disowned her.
That couldn’t be further from the truth. Her parents frequently join her on tour and while they may not be completely on board with “I Kissed A Girl,” they still support their daughter 100%.
One of the bright spots in the film belongs to Katy Perry’s grandmother. It’s obvious to see where Katy inherited her quick wit and sass.
When asked how the concert was, Grandma Perry hilariously responds, “Loud!”
Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D opens in theaters July 5th.
