Supreme Court Strikes Down Federal Defense Of Marriage Act
The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down a federal provision denying benefits to legally married same-sex couples. The court on Wednesday invalidated the Defense of Marriage Act, which had prevented wed gay couples from receiving a range of tax, health and retirement benefits that are generally available to married people. The vote was 5-4.

Calif. Same-Sex Marriage Gets A Supreme Court Win; SF Celebrates
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that backers of Proposition 8, California’s ban of same-sex marriage, had no right to appeal a federal court ruling that overturned it. As a result, same-sex marriage can resume in California and Gov. Jerry Brown issued a directive to do so that is expected to take effect by late July.
