Hey guys! My name is Ryan Riccetti, and this is Pop Now, a weekly blog dedicated to everyone’s guiltiest pleasure: pop music! This week, we’re introducing you to Bonnie McKee, a multi-platinum songwriter-turned-popstar, whose new single, American Girl, is gunning for the top spot on our Summer playlist this year.
It’s official. Bonnie McKee’s teenage dream is about to come true. After releasing a debut album that remained mostly under the radar in 2004, Bonnie has returned to the drawing board with a new label, a new sound, and the biggest songwriting arsenal we’ve ever heard. In fact, it’s basically impossible that you haven’t already sung one of her pop anthems at the top of your lungs in the past five years.
While Bonnie McKee may not be a household name just yet, her songwriting credits have propelled the careers and comebacks of Katy Perry (Teenage Dream, California Gurls), Britney Spears (Hold It Against Me), Ke$ha (C’Mon), Taio Cruz (Dynamite) and Rita Ora (How We Do) to name just a few. Pretty impressive for a California gurl!
Luckily for us, Bonnie has saved plenty of colorful lyrics and earworm hooks for her own debut single, American Girl, a summery anthem dedicated to any girl who’s ever found love in a 7-11 parking lot (Talk about finding love in a hopeless place…). As with every other Bonnie-penned hit, American Girl is incredibly accessible and instantly memorable, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing along at every pool party and barbecue this summer.
Just in case you still aren’t convinced this song is a huge hit, Bonnie has called up a few of her chart-topping friends to kick off the song’s premiere. The viral video features everyone from Katy Perry, Macklemore, Adam Lambert, Carly Rae Jepsen, Jason DeRulo, and Ke$ha singing along to the song’s sunny verses and criminally catchy chorus. It’s all sorts of fun, and pretty much confirms McKee’s inevitable rise to the top. Check it out below!!
