The Fast Foodie: KFC Double Down
When KFC announced that the KFC Double Down was back for a limited time, the Fast Foodie had to go out and give it a try. If you are not familiar with this item, the KFC Double Down consists of two Original Recipe® filets with bacon, Monterey Jack cheese and Colonel’s sauce sandwiched in between. The sandwich has no bun as the KFC websites boasts, “Bread is dead.”
I ordered the combo meal with mash potatoes and a 16 ounce Pepsi in order to enjoy the Double Down in its intended form. On first look, the Double Down looked more gooey and greasy than the pictures but that can always be expected as this is a fast food restaurant not a photo shoot.
First bite? Wow. The juxtaposition of the crispy breaded filets with the cheese, sauce and bacon could be classified as fast food pornography. As the meal continued, the sheer grease factor came into play and the lack of bun created an over abundance of grease soaked napkins. In the end, the Double Down got the best of the Fast Foodie (and my wing-woman at the time) and neither of us were able to complete the massive sandwich.
In the minutes following our fowl defeat, the overwhelming feelings were a mixed bag of full stomachs and exhaustion, tinted with the shame of eating such a decadent meal. As I said … fast food pornography.
On a scale of one to five, I give the KFC Double Down four coronaries out of five.
Fun (or scary fact): The KFC website boasts that when the Double Down was originally released in 2010 they sold over 10 million in the first month. By the number that would be about 80,000 pounds of fat and 50,000 pounds of sodium!
