The Nine Worst Spouses in Music

Love is hard, especially for musicians. Through touring, groupies, and rough schedules, they don’t really seem to have much time for romance. Most musician’s spouses (who stick around) seem to be pretty supportive of their crazy lifestyle, and that’s a beautiful thing.

On the other hand, some musicians end up with partners who, well, just aren’t really great matches for them—and it has an effect. Some artists fall down the rabbit hole, taking up a drug habit, depression, dependence or just lose sight of their musical craft. And sometimes, their spouses are to blame. Let’s take a look at a few of the most destructive spouses and couples in modern rock.

Let’s get started with the musicians who married an odd match:

Ono was blamed for years for breaking up the Beatles (which she obviously contested), and only until recently, Paul McCartney had a long-standing feud with her about her involvement with the Beatles.

It’s hard to imagine MJ being married at all, let alone to the daughter of the King, but Presley indeed married Jackson 20 days after her divorce from Danny Keough, despite being ten years his junior. She stood by him while he went through the child molestation accusations, and persuaded him to go to rehab for his drug use. However, not long after, when Jackson was going to file for divorce she encouraged him not to, only for him to find out from the next day’s newspaper that she had already filed. Ouch.

Though they’ve already ‘consciously uncoupled,’ Gwyneth and Chris named their child Apple. APPLE.

Tina Turner and Ike Turner

Ike and Tina Turner had a pretty violent relationship. He has been relatively open about the fact that he hit her on occasion, though he doesn’t view it as ‘abuse’ per se. He told SPIN once, “Yeah I hit her, but I didn’t hit her more than the average guy beats his wife…. If she says I abused her, maybe I did.”

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian

KimYe is a metaphor for the state of celebrity in America. Never before could someone so wealthy and famous for doing nothing but existing on camera marry one of the most influential musicians of our generation. This might be the beginning of a massive decline in the genius of Kanye. That being said, how adorable is North West?

Now, not all musicians marry smart. Sometimes, they marry someone who encourages them down the path of recklessness. In these cases, we’re not sure who is a worse influence on the other.

Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil

Fielder-Civil admitted in a British tabloid that he introduced Winehouse to crack cocaine and heroin, and then cutting to ease the pain of withdrawal when they’d quit. Winehouse had a habit of assaulting people who invoked her temper, including Fielder-Civil. Together, they were pure destruction.

Love and Cobain had a relationship based on drug-fueled romance. They fought, they made up, and while there’s no doubt that the two loved each other, together they were a tumultuous combination.

Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen

Sid and Nancy are one of the most infamously dangerous couples. Spungen had a temper and was a diagnosed schizophrenic, and they both had substance abuse problems. When Spungen was found dead at age 20 in a New York hotel room, many blamed Sid.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown

Though Brown denied he introduced Houston to drugs, their relationship was often portrayed as one filled with verbal abuse, substance and alcohol use, and infidelity. They divorced in 2007, but Brown and Houston seem to have remained relatively close.
