Sporty Spice Explains Why She Skipped the Spice Girls ‘Reunion’

Mel C. was too smart to jump at a half-assed reunion.

After much hemming and hawing, a full Spice Girls reunion never happened in 2016. Ginger, Baby and Scary convened to launch “GEM,” (Geri-Emma-Melanie) a noble effort that fell short by two members. And so, the 20th anniversary of their debut, “Wannabe” came and went without fanfare.

It was widely understood that Victoria “Posh” Beckham’s fashion empire was too robust to resolve scheduling conflicts, but why did Sporty opt out? Melanie Chisholm penned an essay in Love magazine to explain her decision.

“Truth be told, earlier this year after several face-to-face meetings with the girls I made the difficult decision not to be part of a proposed reunion with Emma, Geri and Melanie,” Mel writes. “Victoria had already bowed out understandably with the demands of her fashion label and her rather large family.”

“The hardest part for me was letting people down, the girls, the fans, civilisation?!,” she continues. “Unfortunately something didn’t feel quite right and I had to follow my gut.”

We suspect that Sporty recognized what the whole world already knew: A Spice Girls reunion worth the cost of admission is an all-or-nothing proposition. It’s pass-fail with no room for half-measures, and the 2012 London Olympics proved how worth-the-wait a full reunion always is. Participating in a three- or four-piece act runs the risk of looking needy or impatient.

And Posh, the shrewdest Spice Girl of the all, certainly knows that the 25th anniversary is coming in 2021. That marks a quarter century, a silver anniversary, the perfect chance to do it right.
