The unrated version of “Blurred Lines,” which Thicke premiered April, features several women sans clothing. YouTube quickly banned the naked clip, but not before it racked up more than one million hits.

“We just had a great feeling about the song,” Thicke told Carson Daly. “I made it last summer. I mean, I had it for about eight or nine months and Jimmy Iovine liked it, but nobody was really jumping all around the place for it.”

“And then we shot the video and Jimmy called me seven seconds into the video and he said, ‘This is a smash! This video is amazing!’”

Team Blake:

Holly Tucker sang a rendition of the spiritual hymn “How Great Art Thou.” “How strangely appropriate the song ended up being,” Shelton said, referring to the deadly tornado that struck Oklahoma. “That was the most important performance that you’ve had on ‘The Voice’ so far.”

The Swon Brothers delivered an upbeat performance of Randy Houser’s “How Country Feels.” “You guys make me feel good every time you hit the stage,” Shakira told the duo.

Danielle Bradbery, the season’s youngest contestant at 16, performed Jo Dee Messina’s “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” “You came out here and made country cool once again,” said Usher. “I understand now why [Shelton's] won, and why he’s such an incredible coach.”

Team Adam:

Judith Hill was reluctant to sing Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” because she used to sing backup vocals for the late King of Pop, but she delivered a jazzy rendition that did Jackson justice. “That was equal parts you paying homage to somebody that’s a big part of your life, and you being you, incredibly,” Usher praised.

Amber Carrington took on “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson, with a wind machine adding drama to the performance. “You’re a chameleon,” Levine told her. “You do Rihanna last week, Kelly Clarkson this week, next week you’re going to do something crazier.”

Sarah Simmons rocked her way through an energetic performance of Jessie J’s “Mamma Knows Best.” “My gosh, you can’t fake what you just did — that was rock ‘n’ roll,” Shelton raved. “Sexy!”

Team Shakira:

Sasha Allen switched from ballads to up-tempo pop with Emeli Sande’s “Next to Me.” “I’m so happy that you did a song like this,” Levine told her. “It was time for you to come out and just be uptempo,” agreed Shelton. “Most importantly, it was a great vocal performance, but we’ve come to expect that from you.”

Kris Thomas’ performance of Miguel’s “Adorn” didn’t wow the judges. “You have a fantastic voice,” Levine said, “I want to just feel you thinking less. I still want to see you open up more and get more comfortable.” Shakira came to his defense, telling the other coaches, “Give him a break. It’s not like, ‘who’s got the strongest personality to not feel nervous at all.’”

Team Usher:

Josiah Hawley strummed his guitar as he sang Coldplay’s “Clocks,” but the performance was shaky. “This is a toughy one for me,” Shakira admitted. “There were certain moments where you weren’t comfortable,” Levine noted, calling it “a little inconsistent.”

Michelle Chamuel closed out the show with “Just Give Me a Reason” by Pink and Nate Ruess of fun. “I love how dramatic you are when you’re performing,” Shelton said. Usher added: “I’ll say that that was the performance of the night. It’s just you. You are the theatrics.”

Voting results will be revealed Tuesday night.

With help from a heavy tribal beat, Beyoncé’s latest song, “Grown Woman,” which leaked last night (May 20), touches on the power of femininity. Whether single, married or somewhere in between, this Timbaland-produced ladies anthem is seemingly meant to get every woman up on her feet singing, “I’m a grown woman/I can do whatever I want.” Let’s consider it the sequel to “Run The World (Girls).”

Mrs. Carter has always been a powerful figure in music, but on her latest song there is a new (and different) sense of confidence here. She starts off the track by letting people know she’s been working at this since she was a little kid and she’s no one-trick pony: “Told the world I’m gonna paint this town/ Now b****** I run this.”

On the track, a snippet of which debuted in Bey’s recent Pepsi ad, she continuously touts her power. She sings, “They love the way I walk/Cause I walk with a vengeance/And they listen to me when I talk/Cause I ain’t pretending.” She ends it all by explaining that it took some time for her to get this ego boost and she’s not giving up on it anytime soon. It’s almost as if she’s letting all the ladies know, “If I can do it, so can you.”

When she delivers lines like, “I can be bad if I want/I can say what I want/I can live fast if I want/I can go slow all night long,” it’s clear she’s not apologizing for anything anymore.

Judge Demi Lovato will also return for next season, rounding out the panel.

Cowell commented in a press release, saying, “It’s taken more than a decade, but I’m delighted to finally be on a panel with three girls (I think!). Paulina and Kelly both have great taste and massive experience in the music industry and together with Demi, this is going to be a fun panel. It just feels like the time to do something different.”

This duo certainly add something different to The X Factor. Rowland — a founding member of Destiny’s Child, an R&B solo star and the voice behind the massive dance hit “When Love Takes Over” with David Guetta — possesses variety but can potentially help identify R&B talent, which has gone unrecognized on the show this far. Rowland is no stranger to The X Factor family, having previously served on the panel for the U.K. show.

For the sophomore album, titled Surfers Paradise (out July 16), Simpson said he knew exactly how he wanted it to sound and the type of music he wanted to represent him as an artist. He describes it as a “classic summer album” and said to expect a few pop songs like his latest single, “Pretty Brown Eyes,” a light-hearted club track which introduces his rap skills, along with a few quieter acoustic tracks.

“I grew up playing the acoustic guitar and I decided I really wanted to go back to my roots on this album,” he told Radio.com. “I grew up listening to Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and John Mayer so they definitely inspired a lot of the album too. There’s a really mellow, acoustic sound to it.”

Along with writing his own songs, Simpson also produced a number of tracks on Surfers Paradise, including “Awake All Night,” which he recently released online.

J.Lo and Pitbull, two of the biggest Latin stars working in the mainstream pop world, are far from strangers. Their first collaboration came about during Lopez’s 2009 promotional single “Fresh Out the Oven.” Drawing attention to her upcoming seventh album, which would come to be 2011′s Love?, the track was written by Amanda Ghost, Lopez, Pitbull and Pharell Williams. The track charted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs chart and thus began the duo’s working relationship.

Next up was 2011′s catchy “On the Floor,” which topped more than 18 singles charts and became the most successful single of Lopez’s career. The next year followed with the sexy “Dance Again.” Then-judge Lopez performed the track on American Idol, at which point her racy grinding had some questioning its presence on the family-friendly show. Perhaps taking this criticism to heart, J.Lo toned down her set when performed “Live It Up” last week on the season finale of American Idol.

At the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night (May 19) Cyrus announced that her new single, “We Can’t Stop,” drops on June 3. She isn’t giving much away about the sound of her latest song–produced by Mike Will, who has worked with Rihanna, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Kelly Rowland–but she did tell E! News that she’s been done with the song for “about a year.”

“I’ve had to keep my lips sealed and just not saying anything,” she explained. “So you’ll see.”

Cyrus did however reveal that the song is dedicated to her fans, the people who have never stopped believing in her.

“I feel like this song really is for them and how I feel—that I can’t stop and I’m going to be who I am and they should be who they are and that they can’t stop and no one can stop us,” she said.

Adding, “It really is an inspiring song for my fans. We don’t care, we can do what we want.”

Cyrus later tweeted the single’s album art: a black and white photo of her in a a risqué deep-V bathing suit that shows off her wild side and a whole lot of cleavage.

Rumors are also swirling that Cyrus is recording with Justin Bieber after she was spotted leaving the singer’s studio last week. But she’s staying mum about that too.

“I know pictures are flying around,” she told E!. “You guys will have to wait and see. I’m the biggest at top secrets.”

The telecast featured a number of performance mixed in with various awards for the past year. Taylor Swift was a big winner, scoring eight awards including the night’s highest honor, Artist of the Year, as well as accolades for Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist and Top Country Artist.

Gotye, for major hit “Somebody I Used to Know,” and Rihanna were other major winners, the latter winning in the major R&B categories.

But the talk of the night ended up being Miguel’s performance of “Adorn.” Throughout much of the song, the R&B singer performed behind a screen that allowed images and words to be projected upon it, giving the performance an astral, otherworldly feel. Once the screen was lifted, Miguel trounced to the front of the stage, twirling and whirling before deciding to leap from one part of the stage to another outcrop, which involved traversing over a group of attendees.

But as Oregon Trail has shown us time and time again, you’re not to the end until you’ve hit the shoreline, and the singer just missed getting his whole body onto the stage, landing partly on two females in the audience, injuring one who reportedly walked away with minimal injuries.

Miguel wasn’t the only one who had a rough evening. Justin Bieber, who went the edgy route with his performance and leather attire, was honored as the Top Male Artist and scored the Milestone Artist award, a fan-voted accolade. But during his acceptance speech, Bieber took to some of his detractors.

Following Kanye’s since-deleted “June 18″ tweet (and a slew of non-confirmation confirmations), Kim Kardashian appeared to confirm the release date and title with an Instagram photo showing the album’s packaging yesterday.

Leading up to his SNL performances, West appeared apathetic. In episode promos, he seemed dead-eyed and uninterested alongside host Ben Affleck, having already made his thoughts about SNL fairly clear at a surprise show earlier this week, announcing that he wouldn’t be doing any skits on the show (“Hell nah, I ain’t doin no motherf***ing SNL skits. A pregnancy might explain the singer’s recent cancellation of a show in Antwerp, Belgium on Tuesday due to “dehydration and exhaustion.” This came after fans and pundits spotted what they believed was a baby bump in photos of her appearance earlier this month at the Met Gala.

If this news proves to be true, the future of Beyonce’s North American leg of her current Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, which comes stateside on June 28 in Los Angeles and wraps August 5 in Brooklyn, might be in question.

Meanwhile, the judges showed off their powerhouse singing with former contestants. Keith Urban‘s new single “Little Bit of Everything” made its television premiere, while Mariah Carey brought us back to the ’90s with a montage of her hits, complete with a wind-blown look. Even former AI judge Jennifer Lopez took the stage with Pitbull for their clubtastic summer jam “Live It Up.” Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, PSY, Jessie J, Travis Barker, The Band Perry, Aretha Franklin, and Frankie Valli also took the Idol stage.

Despite the A-list performers, the Season 12 finale didn’t rack up the numbers. According to Deadline, the two-hour finale last night was down 47 percent from last season’s finale. Idol pulled in 13.61 million viewers last night — 8 million less than the 21.5 million who watched last season’s finale. Season 12 is the first Idol finale to have less than 20 million viewers.

Additionally, the New York Daily News reports that Idol season 12 ratings suffered a 20 percent drop overall compared to season 11 ratings. “While Idol drew a staggering 30 million viewers during its peak in 2006 and ’07, that number withered this year to roughly 12 million,” the paper notes.

With Randy Jackson jumping ship after 12 seasons and the continuous judge changes, nothing seems to be able to revive the ratings.

Last month, Bieber was forced to leave his pet capuchin monkey, OG Mally, at the Munich airport because he didn’t have the correct documentation to allow the pet in the country. Bieber was given 30 days to come up with the papers, and he ultimately decided to give up the monkey.

However, it seems he didn’t tell that to the Munich animal shelter where Mally has been held since being taken away from Bieber. The shelter is now billing Bieber for the cost of care for his monkey. Between general care, food and vet visits for OG Mally, Bieber’s bill is several thousand dollars, according to the Munich customs office.

Furthermore, the shelter is still waiting for a response regarding next actions for Mally. He has a deadline of today to come up with papers with legally reclaim OG Mally, otherwise the monkey will be moved permanently to a German zoo or animal park.

I’m a HUGE Madonna fan and shamelessly rock her music through the ages. While her daring style choices is what helped bring her attention in the past, Riccardo Tisci’s would-be punker ensemble is everything but flattering for the seasoned pop star, who instead looks like a menstruating super villian. Seems like she could take a hint from one of Elle Woods’ fabulous fashion philosophies: “When I dress up like a frigid b!tch, I try not to look so constipated”.

1. Nicki Minaj: I’m actually very disappointed in Minaj’s choice. After firing her Glam Squad, Nicki has made a 180 in order to be taken seriously as an artist. However, a little wiggle room can be allowed from time to time and it’s a shame she took the safe route with this Tommy Hilfiger cut-out dress vs. the off-beat outfits she’s turned out in the past.

2. Gwyneth Paltrow: So, out of curiousity, does anyone else think it’s weird People Magazine ranked her as the “Most Beautiful Woman of 2013″ around Iron Man 3′s premiere. Anyway, whoever at Valentino told her Wrapping-Paper Barbie dress was punk, clearly never listened to The Ramones. Unless, she dressed like a poor man’s Disney princess to rebel against the punk rock theme of the night… Talk about twisted.

3. Katy Perry: Now, I’m typically a little “hot n cold” about her outfits! This Medieval Goth Dolce & Gabbana look is anything but heavenly. Honestly, a floor length skirt and more airy fabric could have done this piece some justice. Instead, she looks like an ornate, modern day, Joan of Arc; protecting fashionably foolish stylists everywhere, including the ones behind her.

This spring, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will boast it’s newest exhibit, PUNK: Chaos to Couture. The Costume Institute Exhibition, on view from May 9 through August 14, examines the influences punk rock has had on high fashion since it’s birth in the 1970s. Check out the best of the bad asses and the worst of the downright bad on this week’s two-part WTFashion!

These have got to be my favorite looks from the night. I’m a HUGE fan of sheer fabrics and showing off a slender silhouette, so you know these ladies had me at chiffon!

3. Nicole Richie: Six years after The Simple Life, she proves you can take a girl out of the country, and STAY out! Aside from the floral pattern, there is nothing hokey about Jaime King’s look. Thank goodness!

4. Anne Hathaway: Honestly, I’ve been getting a little sick of this girl. Dare I say, “I dreamed a dream” that she took a break?! However, I can’t deny she is serving a sickening amount of The Crow realness in Valentino Couture.

1. Marc Jacobs: Okay, so why did no one ever tell me that Marc Jacobs is sex on a finely waxed and polished stick?? Polk-a-dots are always tricky to pull off, especially for men. However, he clearly walks the walk and wears the stalk, representing his own brand and signature sexy. Ow!

2. Christina Ricci: Another actress coming out of the woodwork, the Black Snake Moan vixen delivers school-girl-naughtiness in Vivienne Westwood couture. Seriously, “… Baby One More Time” needs a re-vamp featuring this gown! The cut is amazing and the pattern screams rebellious schoolgirl!

3. Blake Lively: This Gossip Girl has definitely been the talk of the town, what with her “talent” busting out of that dress! Gucci did her well: the silhouette is flawless, the train has drama for days, and the leafing on the waist adds to the fairytale feel of this gown.

A DJ is much different than a turntablist. Just ask C2C.

The French turntable squad of 20Syl, Greem, Atom and Pfeil told Radio.com that basically a DJ does a DJ set, which means the person has two turntables and plays a mix of songs. “He’s playing songs from lots of different artists for people to dance,” Atom said.

What C2C do as turntablists, though, is use their individual turntables to make their own music. They don’t play records. They become the instruments with each member using samples of guitars or drum beats (which they record themselves) to construct original songs. “We interpret our own tracks,” Atom explained.

The guys met in high school and bonded over their love of American hip-hop, which helped them define their sound now. C2C discovered jazz and soul music through the samples that were used on songs from some of their favorite artists like Wu-Tang Clan and Gang Starr.

For their 2012 debut, Tetra, the guys — who won the DMC World DJ Championship four years in a row from 2003-2006 — combined a little bit of everything they listened to as teens. “We have all this musical background and we are trying to mix it with something actual like digital music, electronic music and bring also this ’90s hip-hop stuff like the big beats and bass lines,” 20Syl said.

The guys have been playing together for 15 years, but didn’t start working on their first album until 2010 after taking a break from their side projects. Greem and 20Syl are in a DJ squad called Hocus Pocus, while Atom and Pfeil comprise the DJ duo Beat Torrent. The whole recording process for Tetra took a year and a half, mostly because the band does not use samples and had to personally craft all of the sounds heard on the album.

Atom joked that they don’t use samples for legal reasons, but in actuality, recording all their own sounds gives them the freedom to create the exact vision they want. The hard work definitely paid off. Their bluesy song “Down The Road” was featured in a Dr. Pepper commercial. While their soulful track “Happy,” featuring 75-year-old singer Derek Martin, is getting noticed for its dance-filled video, which was directed by Wendy Morgan.

Those checking out this weekend’s Weenie Roast, where the guys will finish out the night with a dance party, should know that C2C’s live shows are quite different than your average DJ set. “We wanted to break the codes of DJs standing behind turntables,” Pfeil explained.

The guys start out standing in a row on stage, but swap positions throughout the night. They also use visuals on screens set up in front of their turntable stations to help fans understand what’s happening on stage. “The visuals correspond to the sound,” Pfeil said. “When you don’t know about scratching and turntablism this helps a lot…to understand what we do.”

C2C’s ultimate goal is improve the live experience for their fans. And hopefully set themselves apart from the rest of the EDM crowd.

“People are just expecting [us] to play dance music,” 20Syl said. “We play a show like a rock band. People just watching us say, ‘They are not DJs!’ We are trying to do something new.”

“I don’t feel old enough to have kids,” she explains. “I know I am mature. But being responsible for another human?”

And who can blame her. The Oklahoma native’s rise to stardom began in 2005, after winning the fourth season of American Idol, and she’s been busy recording and touring ever since. She’s released four albums, had 16 Number One singles, five GRAMMYs, and a dizzying number of other awards from the Academy of Country Music and other organizations. Her latest album Blown Away is considered her most ambitious project yet.

Fellow country star Brad Paisley sums up her talent pretty simply in the magazine profile. “She’s the best female singer we’ve had in our format maybe ever.”

But the beginnings of fame weren’t easy for Carrie. She goes on to say that she used to have panic attacks, and that all the attention was hard to process. “People were touching me, screaming – it made me really nervous.”

People who know her say Carrie has never been very outgoing. Even her own mother agrees. “She was never really a people person. She liked being outside with animals.”

Carrie admits that opening up to others isn’t her strong suit. “I’m probably not great at talking or understanding emotional things. I’ll totally listen. But I won’t have a lot of advice to give. I’m bad at calling to check in, the long conversation. But in the ways that really matter, I’m there. I would donate a kidney.”

Her husband Mike Fisher, a center for the Nashville Predators hockey team, whom she married in 2010, calls her ” the queen of awkward moments.” But he also admires her honesty, “she doesn’t know how to hide her feelings.” And Carrie describes her hubby as “Mr. Nicest Guy on the Planet.”

In the latest installment of the case of the rotating judge lineup, Nicki Minaj announced Wednesday she would be leaving American Idol after just one season as part of its lineup. Minaj follows longtime judge Randy Jackson, who will be leaving the show after being with it since its inception in 2002.

According to Us Weekly, the plan was always for Minaj to last just one season. An insider tells the publication that the rapper/singer will return to her musical career, including recording a new album to follow up Pink Friday: Roman Holiday.

But Idol isn’t the only show seeing a change in staff next year. Us Weekly also reports that Shakira will be stepping down as judge on The Voice, to be replaced by a familiar face — former Voice judge Christina Aguilera.

Sheeran, of course, isn’t the only artist she’s a fan of. In an interview with Billboard, the “22″ singer said she’s also “obsessed” with her other tour mates’ music, especially country duo Florida Georgia Line‘s single “Cruise.”

“It’s the catchiest thing I’ve heard in years, and I love the Nelly version too,” she said. “They’re out on tour with us right now, so I get to hear it all the time.”

American Idol wasn’t the first time she auditioned for a singing competition, though. Sanchez tried out for America’s Got Talent at the age of 10 and was devastated when she didn’t make the cut.

“That’s when I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” she told Radio.com. “I was traumatized when I didn’t make it on [America's Got Talent]. It just made me stronger. Then Idol came and I was eligible for that. I didn’t think I would make it that far. Logically, out of all these people how would I win or how would I get in the Top 10?”

She made it not only to the Top 10, but the final two. Radio.com talked with the 17-year-old during the week of her debut album release Me, You & the Music and Sanchez filled us in on why she likens singing songs written by others to acting (she recently guest-starred on Glee).

Electronic underground heroes since the mid-‘90s with seminal tracks like “Da Funk” and “Around the World” (both found on their 1997 debut, Homework), members Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo would radically reinvent Daft Punk as disco robots from another dimension for the new millennium in 2001 with the landmark release, Discovery.

For Random Access Memories, the pair has moved away from digital samplers and computer programs to recruit a glittering cast of musicians and producers (including Pharrell Williams, Strokes singer Julian Casablancas, and Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers) to craft an album that recalls dance music’s golden age.

“It’s not a statement against music made with computers today, but there are wonderful things you can do in a recording studio you can’t do at home on a laptop. That’s what we wanted to try to express,” Bangalter told Billboard about the recording process. “Is it still a show when a magician makes a trick in front of an audience, if everyone is a magician and everyone knows the trick?”

The album’s sparkling first single, “Get Lucky,” exploded on radio and the internet with vintage guitar licks and disco beats, thanks in part to the band building anticipation with a TV commercial aired during Saturday Night Live and a teaser video shown at this year’s Coachella festival to tens of thousands of music fanatics.

“The excitement and enthusiasm we had making the record, that we’re seeing in the audience right now as the record is about to be revealed, is exactly what we felt was missing somehow in music, which was not missing back in the golden age,” Bangalter said. “There’s a tremendous amount of excitement around movies, TV shows, videogames, festivals and around a lot of artists, but not around a piece of recorded music.”

Daft Punk continue to expand their vision and push the boundaries of dance music on Random Access Memories with unexpected but inspired collaborations with ‘70s songwriting legend Paul Williams (“Touch”), avant-garde musician Panda Bear of the group Animal Collective (“Doin’ It Right”) and disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder (“Giorgio by Moroder”).

“The idea of working with musicians was way beyond making it sound better,” Bangalter told Pitchfork about the “bizarre list” of collaborators that went into crafting the lush productions that make up Random Access Memories. “It was an opportunity to create something on a very personal level with people that we admire the most.”

The performance took place at Adult Swim’s Upfront event at Roseland Ballroom in New York City, where the network teased their fall lineup. Kanye previously performed at the Adult Swim Upfront in 2008, where he was a couple hours late. This time, however, he actually started early, and performed for roughly 90 minutes inside/behind a translucent pyramid overtaking the stage, reports Billboard. Unsurprisingly, there were also projections of his own face as part of the stage design.

West performed old favorites like “Jesus Walks” and “All of the Lights” alongside new tracks off his upcoming album. Among the new tracks debuted was his auto-tuned love song to girlfriend/baby mama Kim Kardashian, which ‘Ye previously performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) Ball on May 6. In it, he sings, “Baby, you’re awesome/ Don’t let nobody bring you down.” The song ends with ‘Ye singing, “I’m awesome.”

Most videos of the performance have since been pulled from YouTube (under a copyright claim by IFPI, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), but a few stragglers remain, including the below video of the aforementioned “Awesome” track.

It was just announced this week that the new season will kick off on January 5 and run through February 23, with show stars like Shirley MacLaine, Maggie Smith and Elizabeth McGovern returning to reprise their roles on the beloved series.

The show also plans on adding six new characters to show, including reports from earlier this year that fans could look forward to a black character joining the show in the role of a jazz singer, possibly as a love interest for Lady Mary, played by actress Michelle Dockery.

According to a Tweet from music mega-star Sean Combs (AKA “Diddy”) yesterday (May 15), he is the actor who’s been chosen to fill that role.

The Swedish duo’s hit, written by Charli XCX, currently sits at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The catchy track has been featured on Dancing with the Stars and Glee earlier this month and Icona Pop will perform it live at this year’s Billboard Music Awards. That’s not all though. New music is on the way and the band promises that their EP, due out later this year, will be personal but will continue with their familiar dance beats.

“It’s going to be kind of spread, because we’ve been through this journey,” Caroline Hjelt said. “Now we’ve been writing and traveling the world and inspirations from all over the place. We love galloping drums, synthesizers and bittersweet melodies [but] for us, it’s very important. We have a lot to say, and we want to share.”

In addition to topping the charts, the band join a slew of fellow Swedes Ace of Base, Swedish House Mafia and Avicii, all whose singles have gone platinum.

“It’ll always have a sense of melody, because that’s just, for better or for worse, who I am,” said Bruno, who is set to play KROQ’s Weenie Roast this Saturday (May 18).

However, Bruno underlined his statement about melodies with a promise that AWOLNATION’s new material will push the boundaries of structure, as well as himself, in new and strange directions. “I tapped on that a little bit with one of our songs called ‘Knights of Shame’, which is 12:30 long,” Bruno said. “I never thought I’d do something like that.”

That said, Bruno does want to keep at the level of success he’s seen so far. AWOLNATION’s breakout hit, “Sail,” hit No. 7 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart and attracted the attention of Macy Gray, who offered up her own cover of it. They’ve followed up their “Sail”-fueled success in recent months with new songs appearing on various soundtracks (“Some Kind of Joke” on the Iron Man 3 soundtrack, “ThisKidsNotAlright” for the video game Injustice: Gods Among Us).

Contrary to what most artists think of the road, Bruno seems to be fueled by it creatively. Showing a lot of discipline, he says he’s been getting a lot of writing for the new album done while the band is on tour.

“Most of the time [on tour] I’m thinking about what that record is going to sound like and the direction it is going to go; The different artwork I’m going to have to put together for basically the whole look of the next record and the whole next thing,” Bruno said. “Touring is a good place to do that because you get to test out songs on your fans and strangers at some points. A lot of times there’s not that much to do on certain days off. Or you wake up in your bus and, of course, there’s the venue and then not much else around.”

Brown announced Tuesday (May 13) that, just as Drake did last year, he is working with unheard vocals from the late R&B songstress for a track on his upcoming album, X.

According to Rap-Up, Brown filmed a video for the new song last weekend. A snippet of Aaliyah’s vocals can be heard in a Vine video from the shoot.

Brown explained the video concept at the BET Awards 2013 press conference, saying “I shot it in the ‘hood. I went to 60th Street and Cedar Block. [I'm] bringing both worlds together and trying to uplift the poverty side of the community and show them where I’m from. I’m from Virginia, but everybody comes from a broken home or being broke — I remember when I was.”
